Brit Marling’s Not Just Another Blonde Actress
Brit Marling, co-writer, producer, and star of Another Earth, a film that we brought to your attention a while back about a female MIT student who finds redemption in a planet of human doppelgangers after accidentally killing a woman and her child in a tragic car accident. The 28 year old actress has tenacity, that much is clear. Not just anyone has the gusto and talent to co-write, produce, and act in a film that has transformed her into a darling of the independent film festivals.
But this wasn’t always her dream, Marling spent a summer intering at Goldman Sachs, a prestigious investment bank on Wall Street, but turned down the offer of a job in order to pursue her passion of acting. “I got to a point where it didn’t feel right. I could feel the light in me becoming dimmer,” she told W Magazine “It sounds dramatic, but I thought, This is a matter of life or death.”
Not one to buy into the Hollywood machine without pointing out its flaws at the very least, Marling had this to say to the magazine: “What people ask of you is that you do bad movies that don’t matter, and if you wade through that swamp you eventually get to be part of stories that mean something. Nobody says to a surgeon, ‘Part of paying your dues is to remove kidneys illegally and sell them on the black market.’ I can’t think of another profession where losing your morality is part of the job.”
Marling has definitely captured the attention of the media, this month landing a photo shoot in V Magazine. The short interview within had the actress once again talking about her background in finance and elaborating on her preparation for the various projects she undertakes.
“I was just, like, wait. I don’t want to get to the end of my life and find out that I haven’t lived it with any courage.”, Marling said about her change from economics to film.
When asked about her preparation for a project, she said, “I spend a lot of time sitting in a chair, looking out a window, just daydreaming about the conditions or circumstances of the story until it begins to feel real, until it begins not to feel separately from me any more.”
Sounds like our kind of girl. She is passionate about storytelling and quality film making, giving up a stable career to pursue art and self expression. She is going to be one to watch very carefully in the upcoming year, her star is most definitely on the rise.
